'The first time I went to the Social was for a Super Furry Animals afternoon gig at the Astoria (citation needed) after party. Staggering out with the band on our journey to drink more, I found out the Social served fish finger sandwiches. For some reason this has stayed with me and immediately fell in love with the best bar in London.
I got to know the Heavenly guys through the bar along with a big gang of strangers that have become dear friends. Fast forward a few years or so and I started DJing regularly at the bar, both in the basement and the bar, mostly the bar. The bar is where it happens for me, literally as the decks are right at the end, conveniently right next to where the drinks are flowing. So many great memories and many things I can’t remember. I can’t think of a place quite like it in the west end of London, in greater London for that fact.
A few years back I designed illustrations that were printed and installed on the outside windows and the basement for the bar’s anniversary, and the TV show Cheers came to mind. Everyone seemed to know everyone else and if a stranger came in and stayed for more than a few hours they’d have some new mates. I couldn’t resist paying homage to the show and the ethos of ‘where everybody knows your name’.
