A bucket list one. Wild Style is the film that took hip hop to the world. Shot in New York with real writers, real MCs, real b-boys. No studio, no actors playing at it. Grandmaster Flash, Fab 5 Freddy and Lee Quiñones are all in it.
Two Limited Edition t-shirts, 100 in white and 100 in black, printed with the original pencil test drawings from the film’s animated title sequence. These are the rough working drawings, made before the inking and colour went on. Charlie says it best, ‘the design is fresh - nothing has been done as simply; the two animation cells give a sense of movement - like in the movie titles.’

'The title animation began during the Summer of 1982 in our Times Square loft office. My painter wife Jane Dickson was also an animator and she was very keen on having animated titles to the movie reflecting the subway graffiti. Jane came up with a simple storyboard which damn well describes what it became.
Zephyr who played Zroc was himself a revered subway writer and was also famous for his design skills. Zephyr brought in his partner in crime, REVOLT, who was also amazing with pen and ink. Wild Style was on all the writers lips those days as the most advanced graffiti style so the animation of that phrase was key to the movie.
Joey Ahlbum, an SVA paper animation wonderkind, kept the project moving on time. And Becky High helped with the in betweens. The crew was working all hours in our sweaty loft but tended to party on my James Brown records and the room rocked with laughter. The entire thing was done for a pencil test before paper was inked. That was old school! But the joy of Black Book graf animation glows from every cell in the title sequence.' - Charlie Ahearn
Those pencil tests are the raw drawings, shot frame by frame to check the movement before inking. That’s what we’re printing. Straight from the animation to the t-shirt. Hand-printed in Glasgow on organic cotton. 100 individually numbered pieces in each colourway, never reprinted.
